Residential treatment, also known as inpatient treatment, is a form of healthcare that involves patients living in a facility for an extended period of time while receiving intensive therapy. Residential treatment is often used to treat issues such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, trauma, and substance use disorders.

There is a growing body of evidence supporting the efficacy of residential treatment for a range of conditions. Below, we will explore some of the research that has been conducted on the effectiveness of residential treatment.

  1. Substance Use Disorders

Numerous studies have shown that residential treatment can be an effective form of treatment for substance use disorders. For example, a 2014 review of the literature on residential treatment for substance use disorders found that patients who completed residential treatment had lower rates of relapse than those who received outpatient treatment (1). Another study found that patients who completed residential treatment had lower rates of substance use and higher rates of employment than those who received outpatient treatment (2).

  2. Mood and Anxiety Disorders

Residential treatment has also been shown to be effective for a range of mental health disorders. A 2019 review of the literature on residential treatment for mood and anxiety disorders found that residential treatment was associated with significant improvements in symptoms.  This is no surprise as an individual receives in one day the equivalent of TWO months of outpatient therapy, quickly multiplying results.

  3. Trauma and PTSD

Residential treatment has also been used to treat trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). A 2017 review of the literature on residential treatment for trauma and PTSD found that residential treatment was associated with significant improvements in symptoms (6).  Most residential treatment centers offer 1, possibly 2 individual therapy sessions per week. At Innova, we offer THREE individual sessions per week.  This means in just 30 days, you get the equivalent of an entire year of time with your therapist. This does not even account for progress made in group therapy and during other therapeutic activities.

Overall, the evidence suggests that residential treatment can be an effective form of treatment for a range of conditions.  If you are struggling and would like to know how you might receive more support in your journey to healing from trauma, abuse, anxiety, depression and even substance use, call us today.  We are here for you.  www.innovagrace.com 210-254-3618
