About Resilience

Resilience is the ability to adjust to, and quickly recover from, feelings of stress and loss of wellness caused by hardship, trauma, calamity, and tragedy. People who demonstrate resilience are known to bounce back from their negative experiences with ease. These same individuals can also maintain physical and mental wellness despite the challenges faced. Those who are not resilient will find themselves easily overwhelmed by their stresses or remain focused on the negative emotions felt. As a result, people with low resilience will find themselves suffering physically and mentally.

Consequences of Weak Resilience

It must be understood that resilience is not the same as immunity to trauma, negative emotions, or stressful experience. Resilience is simply the trait of being able to manage the negative emotions felt, bad thoughts made, and harmful actions planned during trying times. Resilience is the ability to cope. Those who cannot cope will find themselves developing and relying on unhealthy and damaging habits to do so. These bad habits can then lead to physical and mental health problems, such as:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Substance Abuse
  • Alcoholism
  • Insomnia
  • Heart Disease
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Weak Immune System

Becoming Resilient

Some people are just born resilient. You can see it in children who get up immediately after falling down. You can see it in teenagers who take criticism constructively during a lesson. And you can see it in adults who take a deep breath to calm themselves when a problem comes their way. And if you do not see that in yourself, do know that resiliency can be trained with resilience training. With it, you can learn various ways to handle your stress and cope with problems as they come.
